You may have finished Spring Cleaning your wardrobe, but have you ever considered clearing out your make-up bag and skincare collection? These types of products tend to be the ones that people rarely throw away. From nail polish to foundation, many of us hang on to these items way past their expiry date. Unlike food, many make-up and skincare products don’t list best-before dates so it can be hard to tell when it’s time to toss them. However, that doesn’t mean that they last forever. Even mascara and eye shadow can reach an end point.
Applying moisturizer or foundation that’s past its prime could be causing you breakouts and irritation to your skin. We’ve created these simple guidelines to help you figure out when it’s time to toss your old beauty products and makeup.
Mascara: 2 to 3 months. Toss as soon as you notice it’s getting clumpy, dry, or the scent is off.
Liquid Foundation: 6 to 12 months. If it has separated into layers or the colour has lightened, it’s time to say goodbye.
Lipstick and Lipgloss: 1 year. If you notice it starts to become dry or extra sticky, then you know it’s gone bad.
Nail Polish: 1 year. When it applies extra goopy or if it’s separated and won’t blend after a vigorous shake, it’s toss time.
Moisturizer: Up to 2 years. The more active ingredients in a lotion (like SPF) and the more bacteria introduced from frequent usage, the more quickly it can expire.
If you’re having a hard time deciding which to toss, our medical estheticians can help! Just book a skin consultation with us and bring in your make-up and skincare products, and we’ll help you sort through which is past their prime and could be harming your skin. As an added bonus, you’ll also get 25% OFF any of our Colorescience, Osmosis or Pro-Derm products so you can replace your old items! Then we’ll recycle your old makeup to keep them out of the landfill.
Once you have your new make-up and skincare, to keep your products lasting longer do not store them in the bathroom or any place where humidity is a factor. Keep sunscreen, face creams, and makeup in a cool, dry place to maximize shelf life.
This is also a good time to recognize what items are causing damage to your skin, even if they haven’t past their prime. Take a look at the ingredients. If you see the words mineral oil, fragrance, perfumes, talcs, dyes, and alcohols, we strongly recommend deleting these from use. Other words to look out for are parabens, petrolatum, PEG compounds, and dibutyl phthalate. These ingredients pollute the skin, damage the environment, and have been linked to causing cancer and other health concerns. On a surface level, they also cause further breakouts and irritation.
Start fresh this season and book a skin consultation with us to decide which make-up and skincare are best suited for your skin. And don’t forget your unwanted items to receive 25% OFF any of our Colorescience, Osmosis or Pro-Derm products!
