Laser Hair Removal versus Electrolysis Hair Removal

Laser hair removal and Electrolysis hair removal are the only two types of permanent hair removal currently offered to the public. Many of our guests are unsure of what the best method is for them. At our laser med spa we offer laser hair removal service and do not offer electrolysis, however we’ve broken down the key differences between the two for anyone who may be on the fence.

What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a form of hair removal typically performed by a dermatologist or skincare professional. This technique works by inserting an epilator into the skin, this device administers shortwave radio frequencies into the hair follicle. The damage caused to these follicles results in no new hair growth and for old growth to fall out.  Many treatments are required for full results, as only a small area can be treated at a time.

Side effects and risks

Common side effects of electrolysis hair removal include minor redness, swelling and/or skin irritation. These side effects usually subside within a day. A bigger risk associated with electrolysis hair removal is the possibility of infection from needles that haven’t been properly sterilized. This can result is permanent scarring.
Aftercare and follow-up
Electrolysis offers permanent results because of the destruction caused to the hair follicles. The thicker the area of the hair being treated the longer it can take to reap the full results of the treatment. Sessions are usually booked weekly or bi-weekly, electrolysis requires many more treatments than laser hair removal as only small areas of the skin can be treated at once.

Laser Hair Removal

Urban Body Laser is Vancouver’s most trusted laser med spa for permanent hair removal. We believe laser hair removal to be the most effective, innovative and efficient means of permanently stunting the growth of hair. Laser hair removal works by targeting the darker pigment contained in your hair, this leads to a damage in the follicles that over the course of a series of treatments permanently removes hair from the body. Permanent results are achieved after up to 12 treatments spaced roughly between 6 and 11 weeks apart.

Why Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can be done on almost any area of the body one may face unwanted body or facial hair. You can expect to go about your regular activities immediately following your treatment, there is no downtime required! After just your first treatment you will notice a dramatic reduction in hair, when hair does grow in it’s much finer and generally lighter in colour. Our laser med spa has four different hair removal systems to treat just about any skin or hair type.

Side Effects

Side effects from laser hair removal treatments are minimal- some guests may experience mild redness or sensitivity, however when these symptoms are present they tend to resolve within a few hours.

What to Expect

Most guests report minimal amounts of pain during their treatments however if you have sensitive skin you do have the option to have a numbing gel applied prior to treatment. At our laser med spa we take every precaution to ensure your treatment is as safe and comfortable as possible. Some guests enjoy an ice pack or cool compress on the skin immediately following their treatment.
Laser hair removal works by preventing hair growth not by physically removing it. We do ask our guests to do a thorough shave of the skin the day of treatment.
Follow up treatments are required, with our “Touch ups for life plan” you’ll receive 12 treatments and free follow-up touchups if you ever experience any regrowth.
Depending on the equipment our technician selects for you it may be advised to minimize your sun exposure up to a month prior to treatment. Tanned skin may put you at risk for increased sensitivity, burning or pigmentation issues.

FotoFacial®-AgeDelay

The FotoFacial®-AgeDelay™ was developed by internationally renowned skincare expert, Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr. This treatment rejuvenates skin by correcting redness, age spots, and broken capillaries. It has also proven to cause aged skin cells to behave like young healthy skin cells. Regular treatments will restore the look of healthy glowing skin, and also delay the aging process.

Microdermabrasion

Our skin care center offers microdermabrasion treatments to gently rejuvenate the skin with a non-invasive exfoliation technique. Microdermabrasion works by removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells to leave skin looking smoother, less congested and more radiant. Our microdermabrasion treatments can work to improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles, decongest skin and release ingrown hairs.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a revolutionary treatment that is rapidly gaining popularity amongst Hollywood’s most elite! This procedure utilizes a device covered with tiny, shallow needles that create micro-injuries by poking holes in the skin surface. Those therapeutic injuries prompt skin to stimulate collagen and thus works to fill in fine lines, plump skin and dramatically improve the look of scarring.

BBL Acne Treatments

Our BBL procedures for acne utilize blue light and work by destroying the bacteria that causes the acne in the first place.  A series of laser acne treatments are delivered twice a week for a period of weeks. Your technician will recommend the correct duration of your treatment based on your skin’s condition.

Acne can be an extremely frustrating skin condition that wreaks havoc on one’s self esteem. Sadly an effective acne treatment can be difficult to find, with many cases acne can and often does persist long after the teenage years. The causes of acne vary from person to person but it is often thought to be causes by hormonal imbalances, certain foods, stress and other factors.
Acne consists of a group of inflamed clogged pores and is mainly found on the face, chest, back or buttocks regions of the body. Acne is considered a chronic inflammatory disorder of the sebaceous glands. Forms of acne differ from person to person, in mild to moderate cases you may experience black heads, white heads and enlarged painful red pores. In worst case scenarios nodules, cysts and abscesses can create painful breakouts that can lead to scarring if not treated properly.
Our medical spa offers Blue light BBL filter treatments as an effective acne treatment. We are confident that a series of treatments can put you on the path to clearer, brighter and acne free skin.

How does it work?

Our blue light therapy treatments work by targeting the bacteria that causes acne, it destroys the bacteria and allows the skin to heal more efficiently. Our medical aestheticians administer a series of laser acne treatments twice a week over the course of several weeks- this is dependent on the severity of your outbreak and your skin profile. Generally speaking a treatment course will last 4 weeks with each session lasting about 15 minutes.
Treatments are not considered painful most guests report a warm tingling feeling.
Immediately following treatment the skin may be pink or slightly red with some mild swelling and/or temporary tenderness along the jawline. We always offer our guests a complimentary Colorescience application so you never leave looking like you have had a treatment.
BBL acne phototherapy is an effective acne treatment that is utilized on mild to severe inflammatory and cystic acne. Our treatments are ideal for reducing the appearance of redness associated with acne.

Can Photofacial acne treatment be combined with other therapies?

Chronic acne often leaves scarring, pigmentation issues or cratering in the skin. We have found Microneedling to be one of the most effective treatments for acne scarring. The use of therapeutic laser medical microdermabrasion for acne scars has also been shown to over time reduce the appearance of scarring associated with acne.

Microneedling for Acne Scars

A Medical microneedling treatment using the DermaPen is an ideal treatment for reducing the look of acne scars. The DermaPen utilizes micro-sized sterile, ultra-fine, surgical strength needles to pierce the skin thus creating micro-injuries. These micro-injuries stimulate an increase in new collagen and elastin to rebuild the skin and prompt the growth of new healthy skin cells. This results in new healthier and smoother looking skin.
Depending on the severity and  condition of the skin the amount of treatments required may vary. We generally recommend a series of 5 treatments, to allow skin cell regeneration we suggest spacing treatments 6-8 weeks apart.

Microdermabrasion for Acne Scars

Microdermabrasion is a less intense yet still effective acne treatment and method of repairing the skin damage caused by cystic acne. Microdermabrasion works by removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, this signals the body to replace and repair these damaged cells, resulting in a smoother skin and improved pigmentation.   It is possible for laser spa medical microdermabrasion treatments to restore healthy looking skin with ongoing and consistent treatments. Always speak with one our skincare experts to determine what the best course of treatments is for you!

Microneedling is becoming an ever increasingly popular skincare treatment and for good reason! It’s incredibly effective at treating a slew of skin issues including wrinkles, fine lines, scars and uneven skin texture. At Urban Body Laser in our medispa we offer microneedling treatments using the DermaPen for a higher intensity treatment, and we also have an at home option, the Derma Roller for guests who would like to incorporate the benefits of this technology into their regular skincare routine.

What is a Derma-Roller?

Our at home Derma Roller contains hundreds of tiny needles that when passed over the skin treatment area create micro-injuries on the skin. These micro-injuries then cause the skin to produce collagen and elastin in much higher levels than usual as a healing response to the injury. As the skin heals you’re left with a tighter, brighter and younger looking complexion. Introducing this tool into your skincare regimen is an ideal way to begin reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and for thickening and plumping the skin under the eyes.

Needle size

At our medispa, Urban Body Laser we offer 2 different sized at home derma rollers- the 0.3mm or the 0.5mm roller. We suggest never purchasing a roller larger that 0.5 mm, as the thicker needles may put you at risk for damaging the skin. If you think your skin requires a larger needle size we recommend coming into our medi spa for an appointment with one of our skincare professionals.
One of the biggest benefits of using an at home Derma Roller is so that you can maximize the effectiveness of your serums. Research has shown that absorption of skincare ingredients is increased by up to 90% when using microneedling or an at home derma roller. Make sure you buy a quality serum with potent active ingredients to get the most benefit out of your roller!
Keep in mind that skincare products and serums containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, stem cells, peptides, and growth factors will be the most effective in order maximize the effects of your microneedling by enhancing collagen production, increasing the speed of cellular turnover, treating hyperpigmentation, and plumping skin. Take caution when using active ingredients such as retinol or vitamin C, these ingredients although they are beneficial can cause sensitivity- applying them after your microneedling session or with an at home derma roller may cause irritation.

How to use your at home derma roller?

Begin by first cleansing the skin, and follow with a gently chemical skin exfoliant like salicylic or glycolic acid to increase absorption even more.
Next apply one to two layers of the serums of your choice (we’ve listed our favourites below!)
Use your derma roller to gently roll over your skin vertically, horizontally, and diagonally. Roll twice over your cheeks, forehead, chin, lips, and neck. Don’t press so hard that you cause yourself pain, be especially gently on the areas of the face where skin is thinner such as your lips or under your eyes- just apply as much pressure as you can tolerate comfortably. Always avoid your eyelids!
After your done rolling the skin you can add a second layer of your serum. If you don’t have sensitivity you can apply retinol after you’re done rolling.

How often should I use my derma roller?

You can safely use your derma roll up to three times per week- however it’s up to you- some of our guests choose to use their roller 3X a week while others are far less frequent. Those with discoloration or wrinkles may want to roll more often, whereas some of our guests are looking to just maintain their skin’s appearance. Ask one of our skincare estheticians what they think is right for you next time you’re in studio, or give us a call.
After using your derma roller give it a good cleanse with rubbing alcohol and keep it stored in a protective case.

Intense Pulsed Light, providing a solution to Rosacea

Rosacea is a common disorder of the facial skin that affects millions worldwide, unfortunately many sufferers have been left undiagnosed. While it is widespread it varies substantially from one patient to another, therefore finding a one fits all solution can be difficult. Rosacea can be physically uncomfortable and sadly often significantly effects self-confidence, and self-esteem. At Urban Body Laser our medispa offers effective skincare solutions for sufferers, you should seek our help if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Redness on the nose, cheeks, chin or forehead.
  • Bumps or pimples on the face.
  • Small visible blood vessels on the face.
  • Watery or irritated eyes.

Rosacea can vary from person to person with different depths of severity, below we’ve outlined the more common types:

  1. Facial Redness (Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea)

Rosacea sufferers experience flushing and persistent facial redness. In some patients, small blood vessels may become visible and symptoms that may occur includes swelling, stinging, burning, and roughness or scaling.

  1. Bumps and Pimples (Papulopustular Rosacea)

Many rosacea patients also suffer from bumps and pimples in addition to persistent redness. Some patients also experience raised red patches known as plaque.

  1. Enlargement of the Nose (Phymatous Rosacea)

Rosacea may be associated with a condition known as rhinophyma indicating an enlargement of the nose from excess tissue. This may include thickening of the skin and irregular surface nodules, which in rare cases may also develop in areas other than the nose.

  1. Eye Irritation (Ocular Rosacea)

In many patients, Rosacea affects the eyes resulting to a watery or bloodshot appearance, irritation and burning or stinging. The eyelids may also become swollen, and styes are common.
Common Factors
Patients can improve their chances of being rosacea free by identifying and avoiding lifestyle and environmental factors that may trigger flare-ups or aggravate their individual conditions. Identifying these factors is an individual process since what causes a flare-up for one person may have no effect on another. These factors are:

  • Sun exposure
  • Spicy foods
  • Humidity
  • Indoor heat
  • Certain skin-care products
  • Heated beverages
  • Certain cosmetics
  • Cold weather
  • Medications
  • Emotional stress
  • Hot weather
  • Wind
  • Heavy exercise
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Hot baths

Treatment
One of the treatments we utilize at Urban Body Laser is IPL or Intense Pulsed Light. One of the ways we know that a person is afflicted with rosacea is when the vessels and capillaries in the face are visible because of redness and inflammation. What IPL does is use a bright flash of visible light to close down the blood vessels and capillaries. A lot of people do not know that IPL uses a specific filter which only releases a precise color of light which will be absorbed by the blood vessels of the skin. This means that the IPL light beam will only have an effect on the dilated blood vessels which will cause the blood vessels to close down. Normal skin won’t be affected by the IPL light beam. The closed down blood vessels, capillaries and red appearance of the face will be reduced.
Contrary to popular belief, IPL is actually one of the safest laser treatments that are available in the market. Many lasers can leave scars or other marks and this is the reason why IPL treatment is often the treatment of choice for rosacea and other skin treatments.
The full results will be visible after about 5 weeks after the first treatment, but many report a reduction in symptoms much sooner. Your treatment schedule may vary, but usually moderate to severe cases are treated 3 times with 5 weeks interval.
People who are afflicted with rosacea have sensitive skin so the skincare products and cosmetics that they use have to be hypoallergenic. It is important that the products you choose have anti-inflammatory properties. Our Calm line of R3 Derma Health skincare products were specifically designed to treat rosacea and those with sensitive skin.
Our photofacial procedure is relatively painless and takes only 30 to 40 minutes to complete in the our medispa. Photofacial treatments also requires less downtime than other more invasive or complex treatments.

The twinkly lights, the frosted windows, the carols sung merrily on high. The season is upon us! We’re starting to dream of decorating the tree, hanging our stockings with care, and waking up to whiteness dusting our neighbourhoods. While there are numerous things to be excited about, the most important part of the holidays  is making a difference for those most in need.
While we may have our lists of goodies and treats that we are looking forward to, some families are simply trying to make it through the coldest time of year. The reality is that there are many members of our community who can’t afford to purchase warm clothing. Rising housing costs and an increasing need for shelters mean that a warm place to rest your head at night is not a guarantee in our city.
We are calling on you to be seized by the giving spirit! For the 7th year, we are supporting the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau’s Coats for Kids initiative by collecting warm clothing, food, and toys to be donated to children and families in need in the Lower Mainland. This initiative was started by United Way in 1992 as a way to stem the overwhelming requests from families who were in need of winter jackets, and has been inspiring the gift of warmth ever since.
Now until December 21st, you can drop off your donations with us, and receive a $150 gift card toward any of our services. You will also be entered into 3 great prize draws: Colorscience Gift Basket – $700 value. R3 Gift Basket – $400 value. And a UBL Service Gift Card – $500 value.
Items to Donate:

  • Coats
  • Toques, Mitts, and Scarves
  • Snow Pants
  • Winter Boots
  • Blankets
  • Toys
  • Food

Something that to us could be a small gesture, can go a long way in a child’s life. Having the means to stay warm through-out the winter could be the difference between a happy memory and a cold Christmas. Help us give back so that the only thing children have on their minds are sugar plums and reindeer hooves.
