For many tattoo enthusiasts, the body is a blank canvas that’s meant to be adorned with art. Whether it’s a tribute to someone you love, an inspiring quote, or just a beautiful piece that reflects your personality, tattoos have always been a popular form of self-expression, dating all the way back to 4th millennium BC.

With the Vancouver Tattoo and Culture Show coming up this weekend, many will be flocking to the Convention Centre to meet their favourite artists, even sitting down for new ink of their own. However, as medical estheticians, we know all too well that more people are concerned with what they put on their skin rather than how they’ll take care of it afterwards.
If you’ve ever received a tattoo, you know how painful it can be. Needles create puncture wounds deep into your epidermis and fill them with ink. This means there are open lesions that are susceptible to infection. That’s why we highly recommend ProDerm Hydrogel, a dermo-calming and lightly moisturizing product that rapidly soothes sensitive skin, especially after trauma caused by tattooing. It’s comprised of 40% organic Aloe which regenerate the skin’s protective film.

Aloe has a long record of external use in treating skin burns, irritations and disorders. It is high in vitamins and minerals, and is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and reparative. We can attest that it helps heal your tattooed area so much faster than without!
In tandem with your Hydrogel, you should also use the Osmosis Shade, a broad-spectrum physical sunscreen that protects against the damaging effects of both UVA and UVB rays. Whether it’s paint on a canvas or ink on your skin, tattoos are susceptible to fade over time. This process is sped up even more after direct sunlight without SPF protection. To avoid having your ink look faded and dull, it’s so important to apply this high-performance, luxurious sunscreen throughout the day.
In fact, the Osmosis Shade is much safer and more effective than chemical sunscreens, which is what you typically find in drug stores. These are made up of more than 12 different chemicals, many of which have not been FDA approved. When absorbed into the skin, they can interfere with the normal function of hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid. We offer free skin analysis and can examine if the products you’re using are putting you at risk, as well as recommend safe and effective alternatives.
Have questions about how to take care of you tattoo, or just your skin in general? We’re happy to help. Contact our medical estheticians in Vancouver for more info.

In our last blog post, we talked about two products that we highly recommend to our clients for laser hair removal treatment: Gentle Cleanser and Hydrogel. These offer a number of benefits to soothe and heal the skin before and after each appointment. However, they can be used for so much more than just that. In fact, the Urban Body Laser team uses these two products in their daily skin care regime.

Having a medicine cabinet stocked to the brim with a different bottle for each possible skin treatment not only becomes confusing, but it’s also a waste of money. That’s why we love products that are both effective and versatile, and these two Pro-Derm skin care items are the perfect example of multiple uses all in one.
Hydrogel
Hydrogel is a dermal calming product that can be used for many other skin conditions besides just post laser treatment. It rapidly soothes skin with it’s anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti fungal, and anti-bacterial properties. It is enriched with Vitamin C, Omega 3-6-9 Fatty Acids, Sea Fennel, and Bio Aloe. It also contains Everlasting and Geranium essential oils that are natural preservatives, making this product free of parabens.
Any kind of Dermatitis responds very well to Hydrogel’s cooling and calming properties. It can also be applied on the face prior to skin care because of the fatty acids it contains. These work as an excellent delivery system for all of the active ingredients. In other words, it helps bring the nourishing components of your cleanser, moisturizer, and other products you use deep into the epidermis.
Our male clients use Hydrogel as an after shaving gel. It contains an active plant extract called Bisabolol that’s derived primarily from German Chamomile. This is an anti-inflammatory, soothing and healing substance that helps to relieve sensitive skin.

If you suffer from sunburn, blemishes, dry, or irritated skin, the Allantoin in this product helps stimulate the cellular renewal and healing process. This is another active ingredient that originates from Comfrey Root. The Geranium essential oil is also used as a healing antiseptic that soothes blemishes and revitalizes dry skin.
Gentle Cleanser
Most cleansers and soaps are alkaline, which often irritate the skin and partially neutralize the action of Glycolic Acid (AHA). The Pro-Derm Gentle Cleanser has a optimal PH of 4.5., so it maintains the skin’s protective acid mantle.  It also contains 40% certified BIO Aloe that helps to soften and heal the skin. This natural anti-stress for the epidermis is recommended for couperosis, sensitive, or dry and delicate skin.

You probably know lavender for its calming, soothing scent, and the same can be applied to what it does for the skin. Gentle Cleanser has certified organic lavender that acts as a healing, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory. It naturally has relaxing, soothing, and calming properties making it wonderful for any skin type. We highly recommend the Gentle Cleanser for those who suffer from delicate, dry, flask, congested, acne-prone and red-prone skin.
As you can see, Hydrogel and Gentle Cleanser are suitable for any skin type and condition. We can’t stress how important it is to do your research before you buy a product, no matter what the price point is. Just because a skin care item is expensive doesn’t mean it’s going to be good for you, so make sure you’re choosing the right products for your skin’s needs. If you need some guidance, we’re happy to help!
