For many tattoo enthusiasts, the body is a blank canvas that’s meant to be adorned with art. Whether it’s a tribute to someone you love, an inspiring quote, or just a beautiful piece that reflects your personality, tattoos have always been a popular form of self-expression, dating all the way back to 4th millennium BC.

With the Vancouver Tattoo and Culture Show coming up this weekend, many will be flocking to the Convention Centre to meet their favourite artists, even sitting down for new ink of their own. However, as medical estheticians, we know all too well that more people are concerned with what they put on their skin rather than how they’ll take care of it afterwards.
If you’ve ever received a tattoo, you know how painful it can be. Needles create puncture wounds deep into your epidermis and fill them with ink. This means there are open lesions that are susceptible to infection. That’s why we highly recommend ProDerm Hydrogel, a dermo-calming and lightly moisturizing product that rapidly soothes sensitive skin, especially after trauma caused by tattooing. It’s comprised of 40% organic Aloe which regenerate the skin’s protective film.

Aloe has a long record of external use in treating skin burns, irritations and disorders. It is high in vitamins and minerals, and is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and reparative. We can attest that it helps heal your tattooed area so much faster than without!
In tandem with your Hydrogel, you should also use the Osmosis Shade, a broad-spectrum physical sunscreen that protects against the damaging effects of both UVA and UVB rays. Whether it’s paint on a canvas or ink on your skin, tattoos are susceptible to fade over time. This process is sped up even more after direct sunlight without SPF protection. To avoid having your ink look faded and dull, it’s so important to apply this high-performance, luxurious sunscreen throughout the day.
In fact, the Osmosis Shade is much safer and more effective than chemical sunscreens, which is what you typically find in drug stores. These are made up of more than 12 different chemicals, many of which have not been FDA approved. When absorbed into the skin, they can interfere with the normal function of hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid. We offer free skin analysis and can examine if the products you’re using are putting you at risk, as well as recommend safe and effective alternatives.
Have questions about how to take care of you tattoo, or just your skin in general? We’re happy to help. Contact our medical estheticians in Vancouver for more info.

You may have noticed more advertisements and buzz around serums. A relatively new product in the skincare market, serums are gaining a loyal following for many reasons. However, we find many clients are confused over why, when, and how to use them.
serum
A common misconception is that serums can replace moisturizers. This is completely false as they both have very different purposes. Facial creams have been around for a long time and are still the most popular form of skin care. They’re a vital component to any skin care regime and should never be replaced with serums or any other products. They’re typically made by mixing oil with water and are primarily meant to hydrate the skin.
Serums on the other hand are a concentrated way to get key ingredients into the skin. The main reason you’d want to use a facial serum is to get added nutrients into deeper layers of your skin that a regular moisturizer is not able to reach. The junction between the two main layers of our skin (epidermis and dermis) is extremely hard to penetrate. While this is a good thing because it protects our skin, it also means it’s difficult to get the active ingredients into the depths of your skin where it is needed.
This is why you need a serum with an effective delivery system. So before you purchase one, make sure that it has a delivery system for those active ingredients to properly penetrate into the deep layer of your skin. Otherwise you’ll be wasting your money.
All of the serums we offer at our office and online store have this essential liposomal delivery system, which means you can treat and correct any skin ailments that you may be experiencing. For example, the Osmosis Calm Rosacea/Sensitive Skin Serum is an all-natural product that reduces and completely eliminates redness while restoring the protective barrier. It also reduces scarring, minimizes the visibility of capillaries, and rebuilds the thinned epidermis.
Other common skin conditions that serums can help treat are acne and pigmentation. To apply, you can either add 1-2 drops/pumps to in the morning and night to your entire face or you can use as a spot treatment. You can find both serums from the Osmosis line in our online store.

Serums are excellent for anti-aging. This Anti-Aging Serum in particular has a 10-peptide blend that specifically targets aging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. Our staff love this product because it gives your skin an instant boost, diminishing imperfections and improving the appearance of any redness almost immediately.
As you can tell, serums can be extremely beneficial for the skin and a vital component to a youthful, radiant, and flawless complexion. But before you invest in a serum, it’s best to contact our medical estheticians to find which one is right for you.

You may have finished Spring Cleaning your wardrobe, but have you ever considered clearing out your make-up bag and skincare collection? These types of products tend to be the ones that people rarely throw away. From nail polish to foundation, many of us hang on to these items way past their expiry date. Unlike food, many make-up and skincare products don’t list best-before dates so it can be hard to tell when it’s time to toss them. However, that doesn’t mean that they last forever. Even mascara and eye shadow can reach an end point.
expiry date of makeup
Applying moisturizer or foundation that’s past its prime could be causing you breakouts and irritation to your skin. We’ve created these simple guidelines to help you figure out when it’s time to toss your old beauty products and makeup.
Mascara: 2 to 3 months. Toss as soon as you notice it’s getting clumpy, dry, or the scent is off.
Liquid Foundation: 6 to 12 months. If it has separated into layers or the colour has lightened, it’s time to say goodbye.
Lipstick and Lipgloss: 1 year. If you notice it starts to become dry or extra sticky, then you know it’s gone bad.
Nail Polish: 1 year. When it applies extra goopy or if it’s separated and won’t blend after a vigorous shake, it’s toss time.
Moisturizer: Up to 2 years. The more active ingredients in a lotion (like SPF) and the more bacteria introduced from frequent usage, the more quickly it can expire.
If you’re having a hard time deciding which to toss, our medical estheticians can help! Just book a skin consultation with us and bring in your make-up and skincare products, and we’ll help you sort through which is past their prime and could be harming your skin. As an added bonus, you’ll also get 25% OFF any of our Colorescience, Osmosis or Pro-Derm products so you can replace your old items! Then we’ll recycle your old makeup to keep them out of the landfill.
expiry date of makeup

Once you have your new make-up and skincare, to keep your products lasting longer do not store them in the bathroom or any place where humidity is a factor. Keep sunscreen, face creams, and makeup in a cool, dry place to maximize shelf life.
This is also a good time to recognize what items are causing damage to your skin, even if they haven’t past their prime. Take a look at the ingredients. If you see the words mineral oil, fragrance, perfumes, talcs, dyes, and alcohols, we strongly recommend deleting these from use. Other words to look out for are parabens, petrolatum, PEG compounds, and dibutyl phthalate. These ingredients pollute the skin, damage the environment, and have been linked to causing cancer and other health concerns. On a surface level, they also cause further breakouts and irritation.
Start fresh this season and book a skin consultation with us to decide which make-up and skincare are best suited for your skin. And don’t forget your unwanted items to receive 25% OFF any of our Colorescience, Osmosis or Pro-Derm products!

It can be a scary transition departing your twenties and entering your thirties. As a 21 year old, no one expected you to think about saving for retirement, making your mortgage payments, or climbing up the corporate ladder. But now that you’ve reached a new decade in your life, it’s not just your responsibilities that may be plaguing your mind. There could be an unwelcomed change that’s also starting to take shape: wrinkles.
Wrinkles are faint lines that appear on the face and usually affect people who are 35 and under. We all know aging is inevitable, but many don’t expect to see crow’s feet and frown lines as they push thirty. The good news (yes, there’s good news!) is that you don’t need to have painful surgery in order to fix them. There are actually a number of effective ways our medical estheticians can help reduce and eliminate the appearance of wrinkles.

The Best Treatments for Wrinkles at Thirty

Collagen and elastin keep our skin plump and flexible. Unfortunately, we lose both as we age. To replace it, we offer Skin Tightening treatments that work specifically to increase collagen. Our systems use broad band light (BBL) which stimulate collagen production by putting heat into the tissue, causing it to contract and tighten.
After your Skin Tightening treatments, we recommend following-up with Photorejuvenation. Fast and convenient, Photorejuvenation treatments can be done over your lunch hour. This also uses non-invasive, innovative BBL technology that is extremely effective to reverse the signs of aging. In fact, a recent study from Stanford University revealed BBL treatments can actually change a person’s genetic DNA to help reverse the aging process.
While these treatments will produce effective results, in order to maintain them you need to be using products that will continue to hydrate and nourish your skin. Like we said in last week’s blog post, it is so important to use the right skin care because what you put directly on your epidermis can determine the look and texture on a day-to-day basis.

If you were trying to hide a baseball under a bed sheet versus a fluffy down comforter, which would you think would do the better job? It’s the same with your skin; fine lines can disappear when your epidermis is evenly hydrated. To ensure you’re receiving enough moisture, the Line Tamer Primer from Colorescience works amazing well.

Other must-haves are the Osmosis Immerse and Osmosis Quench Plus Hydrating Plumper. The Immerse contains powerful antioxidants sourced from natural ingredients like blueberries, raspberries, and calendula. It soothes, moisturizes and replenishes the skin, while the Quench Plus is perfect for under your mineral make-up because it’s formulated to reduce fine lines and wrinkles while firming and evening your skin tone. All of these products are available at our office as well as our online store.
